ABSTRACT
In the last months, the SEACUCAN project was developed by WANGUMAR SLU. This project funded by Consejería de Agricultura, Ganadería, Pescas y Agua, Gobierno de Canarias, had as principal objective to assess the potential of sea cucumber aquaculture in the Canary Islands (SW Spain). To reach this aim, the commercial species were identified, established the necessary requirements to develop this aquaculture, suggested potential locations, evaluated the available resources, and studied the synergy with other aquaculture systems (IMTA) and fishery sector.
Results are supporting the high potential of Canary islands to develop sea cucumber aquaculture, showing optimal conditions for growth and fattening, and counting with many available resources which would be easy the establishment of new companies focused on this aquaculture. Important synergy with fish cages can be implemented using IMTA systems, and other sectors, such as the fishery, could also be benefited.
